Puffbacks
If you notice what appears to be persistent and somewhat oily dust
on furniture, walls, and carpet, it may be soot from a furnace or
oil burner malfunction. A delayed ignition (puffback) creates soot
which is then blown throughout the areas that are heated. Although
there is no thermal damage as experienced with a fire, the soot cleanup
is extensive. If you think you have experienced puffback, be certain
to contact your heating system professional and replace your furnace
filter as part of the restoration process.
